Technical Guides - Simplified Sewage Systems
These guides were developed to support the project: "Improvement of Sanitation, Water, Hygiene, and Waste Management Services in the Municipality of Viana, Luanda, Angola." They introduce innovative approaches, such as the Simplified Sewerage System and Integrated Solid Waste Management. The project is part of the Triangular South-South Cooperation for access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), implemented in partnership between the Government of Angola, the Government of Brazil, and UNICEF.
The Technical Guide to Support the Development of Simplified Sewage Collection Systems focuses on the design, implementation, and maintenance of simplified sewerage systems, offering a cost-effective and feasible alternative to conventional systems, particularly in areas with inadequate urban planning. It emphasizes the importance of community engagement and environmental education as key pillars for the success and sustainability of these systems. Additionally, it provides detailed, practical guidance from initial planning to ongoing monitoring and maintenance.
The General Guidelines for Social and Environmental Work in Simplified Sewerage Systems provide overarching guidance for developing and implementing social and environmental actions within the context of simplified sewerage systems. The document outlines a comprehensive methodology that includes participatory diagnosis, social mobilization, environmental education, and continuous monitoring to ensure the effectiveness and adaptability of projects to local realities.
Access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene is essential for children's health and development. Improved WASH services reduce preventable diseases, increase school attendance, and uphold the dignity of children and families in underserved areas. This initiative empowers communities by transforming residents into agents of change, ensuring that the knowledge and practices introduced endure over time.
